Our Services

  • Condition Assessments

Conservation by Burr can provide a full and comprehensive condition assessment of any book with photographs, binding and text block detail and proposed conservation treatment. The wishes of the client are always taken into consideration, regarding extent of treatment and desired price range. Bespoke boxes are also offered but at an additional cost.

  • Surveys of Collections

We can also carry out an assessment of a collection or series of books. For a collection, a 10% spot check assessment is typical for a collection of 100 or more. This can highlight any clear issues such as mould or red rot. For a series, the depth of assessment depends on the needs of the client and the condition of the books. These can be discussed on a case by case basis.

  • Conservation Treatment

After the initial condition assessment, proposed treatment options will be given and discussed with the client. Based on this meeting, a full breakdown of costings will be sent to the client regarding materials, adhesives, labour and a time estimate. If the client is happy for the work to go ahead, we will arrange for the handover in person or if necessary, by post.

Georgia Mullen, Books Written By (August 2025)

“I could not be more pleased with the result of the conservation carried out on the book. Keara was efficient in providing a quote with a detailed explanation of the work to be carried out. Once completed the thorough report with pictures, has proved invaluable in discussing the book and the work with colleagues and clients. I am delighted that the restoration will mean that it will survive in the way it was supposed to be enjoyed for many years to come. An excellent job all round.”
